The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo
Ad: English Translation
The
Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo emphatically ask
Sen. Olga Mendez: If we confronted a brutal Dictatorship
why cant you confront Gov. Pataki and your republican
friends in the NY State Senate.
We feel like we can be part of
these claims because we stand for the defense
of life and know how much a mother suffers when
separated from her family and because the rockefeller
drug law is in violation of human rights
Delayed justice is not justice.
It would be a real crime to have to wait another
year, while people continue to die.
We have seen the statistics,
we have learned that there are 20.000 prisoners
in New York jails due to this law and that 95
per cent of them are black or latino. Our 28 years
of relentless fighting, for human rights and against
human rights violations have achieved amongst
other things, the annulment of the Impunity Laws;
Due Obedience and Final Stop, in our country.
Likewise, we are convinced of the legitimacy of
the claim to eliminate the Rockefeller Law, because
it is racist, discriminatory and therefore constitutes
an assault on human beings' dignity.
Only a strong political decision
could enable this fair claim, for that, we call
on the authorities to urgently arbitrate the necessary
measures needed for the elimination or at the
very least the reform of this law in order to
guarantee the respect and dignity of human beings
It is the duty of Latino politicians
to strongly pressure for the urgent modification
of this law. People have trusted them as their
representatives, to defend them and to protect
their rights.
It's been years of only promises,
no visible change, and human rights continue to
be violated."
